Hobbies

Teaching Philosophy: As a teacher and tutor, I hope to encourage my students to search for deeper meaning in every activity we do by asking “what does it matter?” If students are able to understand the relevancy of what we read, write and speak about in the classroom, they will be able to conduct deeper, more meaningful reflection – not only about the literature, but also about the world at large. While such reflection is critical to a student’s growth, it is equally important for teachers to facilitate their developing abilities to effectively articulate ideas. In Don DeLillo’s Mao II, one character, Bill, aptly describes the power and influence of effective writing. Every sentence has a truth waiting at the end of it and the writer learns to know it when he finally gets there… There's a moral force in a sentence when it comes out right. It speaks the writer's will to live. The deeper I become entangled in the process of getting a sentence right in its syllables and rhythms, the more I learn about myself." It is this sense of writing as learning – not only about different worlds but about oneself – which I strive to bring to students. I take my responsibility as an educator very seriously, recognizing the potential for student empowerment through a mastery of reading, writing and speaking skills.
